Activities and Diving

We can arrange packages with Taveuni Dive, Nakia, or Garden Island Dive. We strongly recommend pre-booking your dives, and if you want a night dive this is the place for it.

With Taveuni Dive you will dive the legendary Rainbow Reef where beautiful colored fish swim in and out of the hard and soft corals. There are 20+ sites only 20 minutes away by boat. The Somosomo Strait (Fijian for "good water") has strong tidal currents which provide a constant flow of nutrients, idyllic for soft coral growth and fish life. Taveuni is world renowned among divers for this reason.

There are 3 boats allowing us to cater to a variety of group sizes.
All of the dives include weights, belts, tanks, fills, boat, guide and refreshments. Generally it is a 2-tank morning dive, returning for lunch, but the shop can do afternoon or night dives if desired.

Welcome to Coconut Grove Beachfront and the Taveuni Reef System!

Reef information:

Not everyone realizes that a coral reef is made up of tiny animals about 5 mm tall called coral polyps. The hard rock-like structures that give divers and snorkelers alike such pleasure are actually calcium carbonate skeletons created by these tiny animals. These reefs grow slowly; between one to five centimeters a year according to the species. The visible section of the reef that we snorkel and dive on has taken around 1,500 years to grow, and is the home for hundreds of interdependent species, including all the beautiful tropical fish that many people come so far to see. 

Your exploration of the Coconut Grove House Reef:

When you first enter the water, you will be on our white coral sand beach. This sand is provided by parrotfish which chew up the surface of corals rocks, digest the algae growing on them, and grind the rest into sand. Fiji factoid: one single parrotfish can create one TON of sand per year!

In front of the sand you will encounter a rich Sea Grass bed. Sea Grasses are true flowering plants, not seaweeds, and the beds are made up of three main species, “Turtle Grass” with large, flat leaves that look like land-based grasses, “Eel Grass” which has large, shoe-laced shaped leaves, and a small, thin one which doesn’t have a cute common name. These sea grass beds are vital to a health marine environment, providing places for small juvenile fish to feed and hide until they are large enough to head out to the reef. These are mostly camouflaged in various shades of green and brown, but the careful snorkeler will find many of them amongst the grass blades. Fiji factoid: Green Turtles come from as far as Tonga and Samoa to feed in the Sea Grass beds of Fiji.

Once through the Sea Grass beds, you enter the Sand and Coral Head flats, where many scattered branching and boulder corals can be seen. The corals that grow here have to be able to withstand waves, and sometime survive being out of the water for hours at extreme low tides. You’ll find many more fish here on incoming and higher tides than on outgoing or low tides, as they come in from the deeper reef to feed. This is a good area to observe schools of tiny, brightly colored damsel fish hiding inside branching coral heads as you swim past. If you stop and float quietly, they will come out of hiding. Fiji factoid: small round fish always stay closer to corals than slim, streamlined fish, as it takes them longer to swim back to safety if a predator attacks.

Eventually you’ll find yourself on the Reef Slope facing the Deeper Sea and patch Coral Reefs. This is the area where the reefs grow in deeper water and can cover more of the rock. Here you’ll find larger and more types of corals, including branching, table, finger, boulder and leafy types. Please don’t forget that these are colonies of tiny animals, and are easily damaged by careless feet or hands. If a coral colony is alive it is colored brown, yellow, orange, blue, purple or pink. Please don’t touch or step on these! You may find schools of surgeonfish and parrotfish, and usually pairs of yellow and white butterfly fish. Look for sea anemones and you’ll see “Nemo” the anemone fish. Fiji factoid: the largest anemone fish is the female, and the smaller ones males. If the female is removed, the oldest males changes sex and starts to lay eggs!

*On the side, I would like to tell you something here. I have always been an admirer of the night sky - an amateur gazer I guess. Whether it was the sky in Connecticut where I grew up, or the incredible shooting stars in Ladakh in northern India, they have all left incredible photos in my mind's eye.
But I must say to you that you will never ever see the sky more clearly, more brilliantly, or more dramatically, than here on Taveuni in the Fiji Islands.
